How to get red lipstick to stay

There are lots of different ways you can make your lipstick more long lasting, but this is my favorite method for when I know I’m going to be out all day and I don’t want my lipstick to budge!  Keep in mind that if you’re going to be eating or drinking, you’re going to need to touch up, no matter how much magic you make with your application or the products you use.

1.  I suggest getting MAC's Prep+Prime ($16.00) and using that as a base. I use it on top of my chapstick before applying my lip liner and lipstick. Get a lip liner that closely matches that of your lipstick, and apply this all over your lips.  This doesn’t really have to be perfect or even, just make sure you create a clean line around the edges.  This will act as a base for your lipstick.


2.  Over top of your liner, apply an even coat of your lipstick.  Blot this layer with a tissue, and then apply a second coat over top.

3.  Blot your lips once again with a tissue, and then using your finger or a flat brush, set your lipstick with a bit of transparent face powder.  This gives a slightly matte look, which is intensified by how much powder you apply.  Matte lipsticks tend to last a lot longer than cream or satin finishes, in my opinion, but you can skip this step if you wish.

To keep lip products from getting all over your teeth when you talk, all you have to do is stick your finger in your mouth (like you’re eating something off of it) and pull it out.  This will remove all of the lipstick that’s on the inner part of your mouth without making your lips look strange.

How To Do Your Eyebrows

*Sigh* Eyebrows...one of the most challenging parts about being a women.  I have really light eyebrows naturally so I draw them in, however, I still apply this technique to create my shape. 

I use MAC's paint pot Constructivist , NYX Eyebrow Cake Powder in Ash/Taupe & MAC's Dirty Blonde eyebrow pencil {discontinued}.

A) Place your pencil vertically at the side of your nose.  This is where your brows should begin. Depending on the shape of your nose, you may want to start at the inside or the outside of your pencil.  The closer together your brows are, the narrower your nose will look.  So if you already have a very thin nose, you may want to add some shape to it visually by starting your brows at the outer part of your pencil.  If your brows are already very far apart (mine are, due to years of uneducated plucking), you may want to fill them in to make them slightly closer together.

B) Place your pencil vertically at the outer line of the colored part of your eye.  This will determine where your arch should occur.  Another method to determine this is to place your pencil at an angle from the corner of your nose across your pupil.  Do not over shape your arch, because if you make it too thin, your whole eyebrow will lose definition.  Start out with a light hand.

C) Place your pencil at an angle from the corner of your nose to the outer corner of your eye.  This will help you figure out the most flattering length and angle of your brows.  You don’t want to manipulate the tail of your eyebrow to curl too sharply downwards, or to flatten out completely.

D) Place your pencil horizontally across your browbone along the lower line of your eyebrow.  This will determine where your brow should end.  Brows that are too long or too short will throw off the balance of your face and won’t be flattering on your eyes.

Make Up Starter Guide

Here is a list for beginners or for the curious on what are the best products to use for make-up. I have also added some of the products I use all the time to achieve my look. Enjoy! 

Face Primer. This step isnt necessary but it’s good to have a base before foundation either moisturizer or primer or both!

• For oily/combination: Phillip’s Milk Of Magnesia (not a beauty product but very popular in the beauty world as an affordable primer to help control oily skin), Neutrogena Shine Control, Benefit Porefessional, Smashbox Photofinish Light.
• For normal/dry skin: Benefit Porefessional, MAC Prep & Prime Skin Base, Monistat Anti Chafing Gel (not a beauty product but has the same ingredients as many high end primers, great at giving skin a smooth base) or Revlon Photoready Perfecting Primer.

*I use Revlon Photoready Perfecting Primer- it is light in consistency and doesn't cause me to break out

Foundation/Tinted Moisturizer.

Some of these are new to me and I will definitely start implementing them into my beauty routine. Check 'em out:

Beauty Tip #1: Have cracked feet? Put Vicks Vapor rub on them before bed. Cover with socks.

Beauty Tip #2: Tend to your cuticles. Use Vaseline or olive oil every few days to make sure they stay soft.

Beauty Tip #3: Put your perfume on first and then your lotion. Your scent will last longer.

Beauty Tip #4: When applying facial moisturizer, be sure to circle pat upwards. Never pull down on your skin.

Beauty Tip #5: Primer is important. It’s not just an add on. If you are in your 30s or older… be sure to apply prior to foundation.

Beauty Tip #6: Go to sleep with a clean face. Wash your face with soap, apply toner and then go to bed. Don’t add night cream unless you absolutely need it. Your skin needs to breathe.

Beauty Tip #7: When applying moisturizer, bring it down to your breasts. You have to cover your entire neck. To be safe, I always also cover the part of my breasts that are outside of my bra.

Beauty Tip #8:  It’s an oldie but a goodie – drink water. Lots of it.

Beauty Tip #9: When you blow dry your hair – do not flip all the way over to add volume. Push your hair forward from the back of the top of your head. That’s where you want the volume – not by the base of your neck.

Beauty Tip #10: Masks are your friend. Do one at least once a week. If you have the time, aim for 2 or 3. Don’t have money to buy one? No problem! Make one at home using the food in your kitchen. There are plenty of recipes online to choose from.

Beauty Tip #11: You deserve to take care of yourself. Remember that.

Beauty Tip #12: Want to make your eyes pop? Line your bottom lids by your tear duct with nude eyeliner. It will push out your mascara and make your eyes pop.

Beauty Tip #13: Don’t be afraid to mix foundations. I use two different colors to come up with my color.

Beauty Tip #14: I know those baby wipes are really easy to use, but don’t use them to take off makeup. They are bad for your skin

Beauty Tip #15: Dry shampoo is your friend. If you haven’t started using it yet… you are missing out.

Beauty Tip #16: It’s not only about black or brown when it comes to eye makeup. Get purple, green or gold! It will make the world of a difference.

Beauty Tip #17: Laser hair removal works and it’s the best thing since sliced bread. It will change your life!

Beauty Tip #18: Tinted moisturizer is a great product. I wear it 90% of the year. It’s a two-in-one for busy moms and gives just enough coverage to get through the day.

Beauty Tip #19: Don’t go to the bathroom without wearing mascara. It’s like clothing for the face. You can’t leave your house without it.

Beauty Tip #20: Want your manicure to last a little longer? Apply clear polish every few days.

Holiday Nails

Often times, people ask me if I go and get my nails done or do I do them myself? And when I tell them I do my own nails they ask how I get them to look so nice. So I am sharing my tools that I continually use for my own manicures.

For years I use to get the acrylic gel on my real nail and this past March I decided to stop getting them done for two reasons: 1.) It was getting too expensive  -AND- 2.) It was becoming painful. The constant drilling and wearing down of my nail bed made my nails very weak and it took many months and TONS of Sally Hansen's Miracle Nail Growth to get my nails as strong and beautiful as they are today.

 From left to right:

1. Sally Hansen Cuticle Oil // I *always* use this before I paint my nails, I will dab a bit on each finger and rub it into my cuticle then wash it off with lukewarm water.
2. Sally Hansen Instant Cuticle Remover // I use this product about once a month but I think it will vary on your own cuticles. My cuticles aren't too flaky nor thick, so I find that using it once a month helps keep them in check.
3. Essie Three-Way glaze // It is an all-in-one Top Coat, Base Coat and Strengthener and by far the best one I have used! Definitely a must-have for the DIY manicurist.
4. Seche Clear // I use this product as my top coat, it adds a ton of shine and helps prevent chips.

The red nail polish is by Sinful Colors and it's called "Hot Hot Heat", I found this one at my local Walgreens. If you have never used Sinful Colors I suggest you try them, they are VERY pigmented, come in a ton of pretty colors and they are super cheap >> $.99/bottle! The glitter Essie polish is called "Beyond Cozy" and it is one of the Winter 2012 collection colors. I do love my glitter nail polishes but I despise having to remove them.

Purple Lips

The new craze is purple lips! From Lady Gaga to Nicki Minaj, I've seen some pretty purple lips everywhere. When it comes to lipstick color, I like to think I'm pretty bold. But I was a little apprehensive about pulling off purple, so I went with Revlon's Colorburst Lipgloss in Crystal Lilac for a less dramatic look. And for $6.99/ea. how could I not pass that up!?

For my eyes I used Texture in the crease, Bark on my lid and Sketch in the outer corner. For this look, I opted for no false eyelashes (probably because I was in a hurry to put them on ;).

So, I dare you to try some purple lipstick/lipgloss and see how you like it. Remember make-up should be fun so be open to experimenting =) Have a great rest of your week! 

Feeling Blue

I love that I work at a job where I can be bold with my make-up, because on a day to day basis I tend to stick with neutrals. On Friday, I was feeling fun so I decided to go with blue and purple eyeshadow. I don't believe in the idea that certain eye colors should wear certain eyeshadow colors. I think if you can pull it off, then who cares? So for this look, I went with MAC's "Contrast" on my lid, I blended it up to the crease and then added MAC's "Stars and Rockets" to my crease blending this color up to my brows. BLENDING is the key word here. For my inner corner of my eye, I used Benefit's High Brow pencil, now I know you're thinking "But wait, its called High Brow!?" but it can be used as a highlighter for the inner corner of yours eye too. Did I mention it is super pretty and gives you that glow? Although, in the picture my lips look pink, I'm actually wearing a neutral beige (and one of my favorites) "Jubilee" by MAC cosmetics.

So there ya go! I recommend you try blue eye shadow! It doesn't have to be as dramatic as I'm wearing it because you could also pair blue eyeshadow with grays and browns for a more subtle look. Or if you're not feeling that bold for eyeshadow, try some blue mascara, that could be fun too!

Berry Beautiful

For my first day of work, I decided to go for a "Berry" look. The eyeshadows I used were: Phloof!, Sable, Haux & Embark all by MAC Cosmetics.

I used "Phloof!" on my brow (which I pretty much always use), "Sable" on my lid, "Haux" in the crease, and "Embark" on the outer corner. I also wore, Katy Perry's fake eyelashes which I absolutely love! Not only are they fairly priced at $6.99 but some people tell me they look natural. 

And to finish my look, I used MAC's "Whirl" lipliner with "Birds of a Feather" lipstick. 

Ta-dah! The highlight of my first day of work was my boss (her) telling me my make-up looked "gorgeous". And there ya go!
